LAW ENFORCEMENT

DEPARTMENTS

Law Enforcement

The Department of Law Enforcement, under the command of Chief Ian Floyd, is comprised of five divisions – West Division, East Division, Criminal Investigations, Special Operations, and Safe Schools. The men and women of law enforcement are responsible for answering emergency and non-emergency calls for service, proactively patrolling the over 2,000 square miles of the county, investigating crimes, apprehending criminals, and working hand-in-hand with the community to keep Polk County safe.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office practices “PROCAP,” a proactive approach to combating crime and its effects on the community. The Proactive Community Attack on Problems program uses crime analysts and mapping software to alert deputies to real- time crime trends, allowing them to immediately deploy the necessary resources to effectively fight crime. The basis of PROCAP is to prevent crime from occurring in the first place, instead of relying solely on the reactive policing method of investigating past-occurred crimes. PROCAP has been a highly successful tool in reducing the crime rate in Polk County since its inception 19 years ago.
